Wasted Gimmicks Part 3:
This would be the WWE 2003 version of Sean O’Haire. They gave him an awesome Devil’s Advocate type character around this time. This gimmick whoever wasn’t just wasted because of the WWE, but unfortunately O’Haire wasted the gimmick himself. It was reported that he was awful at cutting live promos, which severely limited his potential based on how important it is to try to connect with the crowd. As far as how the WWE themselves wasted him, well, they took a young guy loaded with potential, with a very unique moveset for his size, sent him to OVW and had him pack on a bunch of muscle (even though he was already a muscular guy.) This slowed down his style, basically neutering his moveset (something the WWE habitually does). They eventually paired him with Roddy Piper, an excellent move for him to be O’Haire’s mouthpiece. However, they started slowly removing the cool aspects from his gimmick (leather coat, vignettes, entrance lights), then O’Haire was left dead in the water when they released Roddy Piper. he was a mainstay on Velocity until his eventual release. His only real feud during that time was vs Rikishi, beating him at Backlash 2003, along with victories against Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit, all 3 victories leading to nothing of note. WWE Sean O’Haire everyone.
R.I.P. to Sean O’Haire. I blogged this a couple months back detailing his WWE career. I wish he would’ve cleaned up his personal life a long time ago. He faced a lot of demons, and it’s a shame the way he ended his life. Re-live is wrestling career as a fan, not the way it ended.
